His Story
Athletic Lineage:
Engr. Iyiola Olayinka Ogunjobi (aka Baba Amofin of IGC) hails from a family steeped in sporting tradition. His late brother, Major Taiwo Ogunjobi, was a distinguished long-distance runner for the Nigerian Army. Chief Taiwo Ogunjobi, another brother, captained the esteemed Shooting Stars FC, while his twin, Kehinde Ogunjobi, excelled in table tennis. This rich athletic heritage undoubtedly fostered a love for sports in Engr. Ogunjobi.
Footballing Career:
Engr. Ogunjobi’s athletic journey began on the football pitch as a striker for Critale Hope FC. His talent caught the eye of Barrister Ogunlesi, secretary to the Railway FC corporation, who successfully recruited him despite attempts from Leventis United (Iddo Warriors).
A pivotal moment saw Engr. Ogunjobi transition from striker to goalkeeper, taking over from the established Lati Gomez. His understudy was Eyo Essien, a former Nigerian national goalkeeper. This period coincided with the eras of legendary figures like Joe Erico (PWD), Paul Hamilton (ECN), and the Olayumbo Brothers of Railway FC.
Athletic Diversification:
Following a head injury, Engr. Ogunjobi shifted his focus to athletics, excelling in the 400 meters. Notably, he achieved a memorable victory over the renowned Abiodun Lajide at the Liberty Stadium during the All Line Games. His dominance continued for several years before prioritizing his Engineering career in the UK.
Return to Sports and Beyond:
Upon his return to Nigeria, Engr. Ogunjobi embraced table tennis and lawn tennis as recreational pursuits. Finally, in 2004, he discovered a new passion – golf. This introduction marked a significant turning point in his life.
